New York, NY -Following a comprehensive search, the Board of Directors of Exponents has selected Samantha Lopez as Chief Executive Officer, ushering in a new chapter of leadership for the innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, substance use disorders, incarceration, homelessness, and behavioral health challenges.
Lopez, who has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since 2014, succeeds Exponents’ co-founder and longtime President and CEO, Joseph R. Turner, Esq., who recently retired after decades of dedicated service to the organization and the communities it serves.
The announcement was made by Board Chair George Brandman during Exponents’ Annual Benefit, Evolution, held on June 3, 2026, at Midtown Loft & Terrace in New York City.
“Samantha’s appointment reflects more than two decades of leadership, dedication, and service to Exponents,” said Brandman. “We’re excited to have her driving the evolution of our organization to new heights. “
Lopez first joined Exponents in 2000 as Director of Development and Contracts. She was promoted to Chief Administrative Officer in 2007 and became Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in 2014. In that role, she worked closely with Turner to oversee the organization’s operations, staff, and comprehensive continuum of services, including harm reduction, outpatient treatment, outreach, care management, recovery support services, and the Center for Personal and Professional Development.
“I am deeply honored to step into the role of Chief Executive Officer and lead this extraordinary organization into its next chapter of scaling and innovation,” said Lopez. “Alongside an exceptional team and dedicated Board of Directors, I look forward to expanding access to critical services and strengthening our connection to New Yorkers living with and impacted by substance use disorders, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, incarceration, and other behavioral health challenges.”
Turner praised Lopez’s appointment, noting her longstanding commitment to Exponents and its mission.
“Having worked alongside Samantha for more than two decades, I can think of no one better prepared to lead Exponents into the future,” said Turner. “Her unwavering dedication to our mission, her compassion for the people we serve, and her exceptional leadership abilities will undoubtedly take this organization to new heights.”
Lopez brings a unique combination of professional expertise and personal commitment to advancing health equity and social justice. A graduate of New York University, she has devoted her career to addressing the needs of historically underserved populations and advocating for policies and programs that improve health outcomes and strengthen communities.
